Canberra's 77th Annual Carols by Candlelight Special Broadcast Event
Canberrans are being urged to “light up the dusk” on December 11. Canberra’s Carols by Candlelight will make history in December by shifting from a live stage event to a special broadcast on ABC Radio Canberra. A decision was made earlier in the year by Woden Valley Youth Choir not to proceed with the usual live audience charity performance at Stage 88 in Commonwealth Park due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’re really delighted the ABC could keep this tradition alive even though we couldn’t hold the carols in person,” says choir Artistic Director Olivia Swift.
This year Canberrans will be able to listen to a one-hour broadcast on ABC Radio Canberra from 7pm hosted once again by Breakfast presenter Lish Fejer.
“The carols are one of my favourite times on the annual calendar, I’m so glad the ABC can continue to bring this fantastic event to Canberrans in the throes of the pandemic,” said Lish.
Instead of waving candles on picnic blankets in Commonwealth Park, Canberrans are encouraged to sit on their balconies or in their lounge rooms, driveway or garden, wave a candle and sing along while listening to the ABC Radio Canberra carols special.
It is expected the event can be staged with a live audience in 2022.
This year the carols will raise funds for Lifeline Canberra as part of ABC Radio Canberra’s
ABC Gives appeal. Lifeline Canberra exists to support people in crisis and save the lives of those experiencing
thoughts of suicide. It is a leading charity in the ACT, setting the benchmark for suicide prevention and community-wide awareness for mental health advocacy.
“Whilst the festive season is a joyous occasion for many, it can also be a very challenging time for some. This holiday season will also feel different as COVID-19 continues to affect us all in some way and Lifeline is anticipating an increase in the demand for our support services. We’re so delighted to be partnering with ABC Canberra to raise awareness of Lifeline, mental health and the importance of taking care of ourselves and others,” said Lifeline Canberra CEO Carrie Leeson.
Carols by Candlelight has been entertaining Christmas revellers and raising funds for charity
in Canberra since 1945.
